The ER320LR filler metal falls under the American Welding Society (AWS) specification A5.9 / ASME SFA A5.9 for MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) stainless steel filler wires and rods. It’s specifically designed for welding stainless steels of the “Alloy 320 / 320LR” variety, which are high chromium and high nickel alloys known for their enhanced resistance to oxidation, high temperatures, and corrosive environments.
When it comes to the typical composition of the weld metal (in an undiluted deposit), you’ll find carbon at a maximum of about 0.025%, chromium ranging from 19.0% to 21.0%, nickel between 32.0% and 36.0%, molybdenum around 2.0% to 3.0%, copper from 3.0% to 4.0%, and manganese at about 1.5% to 2.0%. The levels of silicon and other residuals are kept very low (for example, Si ≤0.15%, P ≤0.015%, S ≤0.02%) to reduce the risk of hot-cracking and microfissuring. Mechanical properties typically show a tensile strength of around 86,000 psi (about 593 MPa) and a yield strength of approximately 57,500 psi (around 396 MPa), with an elongation of about 35% for the deposited weld metal. Thanks to its low residuals and high alloy content, this filler provides outstanding resistance to high-temperature oxidation and aggressive corrosive environments, making it a great choice for demanding service conditions.
