The AWS Class ER308/308L SAW and flux wire is a specialized stainless steel welding consumable crafted for Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) of austenitic stainless steels like 304 and 304L. The “L” version features a low carbon content (≤ 0.03–0.04%) to help minimize carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion. When paired with the right flux, it delivers high-deposition welds that boast excellent corrosion resistance, good toughness, and reliable mechanical properties. To enhance weld quality and performance, it’s crucial to manage heat input, control interpass temperatures, and prepare the base metal properly.
The typical composition of the weld metal includes carbon at ≤ 0.03–0.04%, chromium ranging from 19.5–22%, nickel between 9–11%, molybdenum up to 0.75%, manganese from 1–2.5%, and silicon at 0.3–0.65%. In terms of mechanical properties, you can expect a tensile strength of about 610 MPa, yield strength around 410 MPa, and elongation of 35–40%, which together create strong, durable, and corrosion-resistant welds that are perfect for tough environments.
