The AWS Class E309/309L‑16 electrodes are a type of austenitic stainless steel stick welding rods specifically crafted for welding stainless steels that belong to the 22% chromium and 12% nickel family. They’re also great for joining dissimilar metals, like stainless steel to carbon or low-alloy steels. The “L” version stands out with its extra-low carbon content (≤ 0.04%), which helps minimize carbide precipitation and enhances resistance to intergranular corrosion.
When it comes to the typical composition of the weld metal, you’ll find carbon levels at ≤ 0.04% for E309L‑16 or up to 0.15% for E309‑16. The chromium content ranges from 22% to 25%, nickel from 12% to 14%, and there’s molybdenum up to 0.75%, manganese between 0.5% and 2.5%, and silicon up to 1.0%. In terms of mechanical properties, these electrodes offer a tensile strength of about 520–593 MPa and an elongation of roughly 30–36%, ensuring that the welds are strong, durable, and resistant to corrosion.
