The ER308/308H filler metals meet the standards set by the American Welding Society (AWS) A5.9 and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME SFA 5.9) for austenitic stainless welding wire. ([Midalloy][1]) When it comes to chemical composition, ER308/308H weld deposits typically contain around 19.5–22.0% chromium and 9.0–11.0% nickel. ([oxfordalloys.com][2]) The “H” version (ER308H) has a higher carbon content (0.04–0.08%) compared to the standard ER308 (which maxes out at about 0.03% in the “L” version), giving it better strength at elevated temperatures. ([technitoolinc.com][3]) In terms of mechanical properties, you can expect an ultimate tensile strength of around ~600 MPa (approximately 87,000 psi) and a yield strength between ~400–420 MPa (around 59,000 psi). Elongation values typically fall in the range of ~39–41%. ([shantimetal.com][4])
ER308/308H SAW & Flux consumables are specifically designed for submerged arc welding of unstabilized austenitic stainless steels, including types 301, 302, 304, 305, and 308/308H. ([oxfordalloys.com][2]) These materials are commonly used in the fabrication of equipment and components that operate at high temperatures or need to resist corrosion under moderate conditions. Industries that frequently utilize this wire include chemical processing, petrochemical, food and beverage, power generation, and general stainless steel fabrication. The higher-carbon ER308H version provides enhanced strength for high-temperature applications, making it ideal for situations where elevated creep resistance or temperature stability is crucial.
