AWS Class E317L‑16 electrodes are a type of austenitic stainless steel stick welding rods specifically crafted for welding 317/317L stainless steels. They stand out for their impressive corrosion resistance, thanks to a higher molybdenum content. The “L” variant features low carbon levels (≤ 0.04%), which helps reduce carbide precipitation and boosts resistance to intergranular corrosion.
When it comes to typical weld metal composition, you can expect carbon levels up to 0.04%, chromium ranging from 18–21%, nickel between 12–14%, molybdenum at 3–4%, manganese from 0.5–2.5%, and silicon up to 0.9%. The mechanical properties are quite robust, with tensile strength hovering around 550–620 MPa and elongation rates of about 30–38%, ensuring that the welds are strong, durable, and resistant to corrosion.
