The AWS E308/308L‑16 electrode is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel stick welding consumable that meets the standards set by the American Welding Society (AWS) A5.4 and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) SFA 5.4 for classes E308‑16 and E308L‑16. It’s specifically crafted for welding stainless steels with 18% chromium and 8% nickel, like 304, 304L, 301, and 302, but it can also work with stabilized alloys such as 321 and 347. The “L” in E308L‑16 signifies its extra-low carbon content (capped at around 0.04% C), which helps reduce carbide precipitation and boosts resistance to intergranular corrosion.
When it comes to the typical chemical composition of the weld metal for E308/308L‑16, you can expect carbon to be ≤ 0.04%, chromium to be in the range of 18.0–21.0%, nickel around 9.0–11.0%, manganese between 0.5–2.5%, silicon up to about 1.0%, and molybdenum maxing out at around 0.75%, along with trace amounts of copper, phosphorus, and sulfur that stay within regulated limits. In terms of mechanical properties, the as-welded tensile strength is approximately 75 ksi (about 520 MPa) or more, with a yield strength of around 54 ksi (about 370 MPa) or higher, and a minimum elongation of about 35–40%.
